SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA AND APPLICATION FORM
The Maui Portuguese Cultural Club strives to raise money that may be appropriated towards one or two awards, of $500-$1,000, yearly. Award amounts vary from year to year in accordance to the amount of interest accrued. Through monthly baking and selling Traditional Stone Oven White Bread and Cinnamon bread, our diligent members work hard to obtain profits from the sale that are set aside for this purpose as well as for club function.
The application process is designed to help our youth of Portuguese ancestry discover their roots and learn more about their culture. Applicants will need to speak to their family historian and research points of origin. They will need to reflect upon their heritage and what value it holds for them. Also, the process will help them discover how their individual families continue to keep Portuguese customs alive and well within their home.
Scholarship awards are for one year only. Applicants awarded with money for college will not be awarded again the following year. Applicants will need to re-apply in order to be considered. Applicants will be notified by mail that their application was complete and accepted for consideration as well as for letters of award given or regret. Winning candidates will be asked to appear before our membership to accept the Scholarship award (or a parent as proxy if away at school). All awards will be mailed directly to the billing office of the College or University that the applicant will be attending.

For Outstanding Service to the Maui Portuguese Cultural Club
King Kekaulike High School Senior, Johnathan Harris was awarded a $500.00 Service Award for his outstanding contribution to the Maui Portuguese Cultural Club's monthly fundraising Bread Bake. For the last two years, Johnathan arrives at 5:00am and heats the wood burning, stone oven for the club in the morning every first Saturday of the month. He and his family also cuts kiawe wood and hauls it to the baking oven. For two years, Johnathan has dedicated his time each month, even on the morning of his Senior Prom, so that our club could continue to raise funds for operation and offering scholarship. This "A" student, who is graduating this year, wants to attend a University to get an Engineering Degree specializing in alternative energy.

CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU JOHNATHAN!
